Dates for the Indian Market: Varieties & Seasons

A wholesale buyer's guide to date varieties — Medjool, Ajwa, Kimia, Safawi — and how Ramadan demand, origin, and seasonality affect pricing.

The Big Four Varieties

Four date varieties dominate the Indian wholesale market:

Medjool — the largest, softest, and most expensive. Caramel-like flavour, impressive size. Primarily sourced from Palestine, Jordan, and the USA. Used for premium retail and gifting. Demand is growing steadily as Indian consumers trade up.

Ajwa — dark, soft, medium-sized dates from Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Religiously significant in Muslim communities, which drives strong demand during Ramadan. Premium pricing, limited genuine supply. Be cautious of look-alikes sold as Ajwa — authentic Ajwa comes only from Madinah.

Kimia (Mazafati) — soft, moist, dark Iranian dates. The most popular everyday date in India by volume. Sweet, accessible price point, and widely available. The go-to variety for retail packing and food service.

Safawi — semi-dry Saudi dates with a firm texture and balanced sweetness. More affordable than Ajwa, with a longer shelf life due to lower moisture. Good for commercial use and Ramadan gifting at mid-range pricing.

The Ramadan Demand Surge

Ramadan is the single biggest driver of date demand in India. Consumption spikes dramatically in the weeks leading up to and during Ramadan, as dates are traditionally used to break the fast (iftar).

For wholesale buyers, the practical implication is clear: order early. Prices for Ajwa and Kimia can increase 20-40% in the 2-3 months before Ramadan compared to off-season rates. Premium varieties face genuine supply constraints — not just price inflation.

Our recommendation: place Ramadan orders 2-3 months in advance. For Ajwa specifically, 3-4 months ahead is safer. We can help lock in pricing early and ensure your stock arrives well before demand peaks.

Outside Ramadan, the date market is relatively stable. There is year-round demand for Kimia and Medjool driven by health-conscious consumers and the gifting market (Diwali, weddings, corporate hampers).

Saudi vs Iranian Origins

Saudi Arabia and Iran are the two primary origins for dates sold in India, and they serve different market segments.

Saudi dates (Ajwa, Safawi, Sukkari, Khudri) carry religious and cultural prestige. They are perceived as premium and command higher prices. Saudi dates also tend to be drier, which extends shelf life — an advantage for wholesale distribution.

Iranian dates (Kimia/Mazafati, Piarom, Rabbi) are softer, moister, and more affordable. Iran is the world's largest date producer, and its Kimia variety has become the default everyday date in India. The higher moisture content means shorter shelf life and more careful storage requirements.

For retail packing: Kimia for value, Medjool for premium. For gifting: Ajwa and Medjool for religious and luxury positioning. For food manufacturing: Safawi or Kimia depending on the texture needed.

Import duties and supply routes also differ. Iranian dates currently enter India at competitive pricing, while Saudi dates carry a slight premium due to logistics and brand positioning.

Storage and Shelf Life

Dates are higher in moisture than most dry fruits, which makes storage critical.

Soft dates (Kimia, Medjool, Ajwa): Store at 2-8°C (refrigerated). At room temperature in Indian conditions, soft dates can ferment or develop mould within 2-4 weeks. Refrigerated, they last 6-12 months. Never store soft dates in non-AC warehouses during summer.

Semi-dry dates (Safawi, Khudri): More forgiving. Room temperature storage is acceptable for 1-3 months in cool, dry conditions. Refrigeration extends life to 12+ months.

Dry dates (Chuara): Virtually shelf-stable. Store in a dry place and they last over a year.

Packaging matters enormously. Dates should be in sealed food-grade packaging — open exposure to air accelerates crystallisation (white sugar spots on the surface). Crystallisation is harmless but looks unappealing and will generate customer complaints. Vacuum-sealed or nitrogen-flushed packaging prevents this.

At Star Almond, all our dates are cold-chain managed from import to dispatch. We can advise on storage setup if you are scaling your date business.
